The Netherlands is low-lying, and it is made up largely of #@1.2.1.dir|polders#. One quarter of the country is below sea level and relies on dunes, dikes and other flood defences for protection against the sea. Without them, much of the Netherlands would be flooded when water levels rise. The Delta Project was carried out after the #@1.2.2.dir|1953 floods#.
